Art and Soul Renaissance evolved from a love of books… a tree change ….and a renaissance for owner Greta Thomas. After leaving her local government career, Greta needed a tree change, and from a “Creativity Workshop” in Florence in 2006, plans began to flourish into what now is “Art and Soul, Renaissance”.
Greta’s renaissance saw her launching her new adventure in a quaint timber cottage on Gateway Island, known as part of the “Custom’s Cottages” original building at Gateway Village. It had to include all the things Greta loves: books, art, gifts, vintage and recycled shabby chic items, and timber furniture. From this grew an eclectic mix of locally made, creative items, with gifts for artists, writers and readers and a well stocked choice of secondhand books – which can be returned for a credit on future purchases.
Greta wanted to create a unique shopping experience, a relaxing and ambiance, where customers feel welcome, unrushed and can wander throughout the two vibrant rooms taking time to browse in a peaceful setting of unhurriedness. Customers can grab a coffee next door, or enjoy a relaxed lunch and then wander through Art and Soul, amid the myriad of colour. There is literally something for everyone in this soulful cottage. With gift wrapping and gift vouchers available, there’s something to suit every one and every lifestyle, or find that perfect unique gift for someone who has everything.
Art and Soul supports regional artists by displaying their art, and offering unique pieces for sale to visitors and locals. Visitors to the region can take something of the area home with them from their travels.
Gateway Village is on Gateway Island, land surrounded by the mighty Murray River to the north and Wodonga Creek to the south. Adjacent to Art and Soul Renaissance, is La Maison café, open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Gateway Village also has a Visitor Information Centre, a Woodcrafter’s Cottage run and bursting with locally crafted timber gifts, “Inspire Me” Scrapbooking store, Musikids, canoe hire, is home to Hothouse Theatre and High Water Theatre Company, and Murray Arts (regional arts board), is home also to Creator’s Art Space, a locally incorporated Exhibition space, and has the Three Monkey’s Tavern and Harvey’s Fish & Fun Park as neighbours.
The Village has BBQ’s, pathways along the Murray River, an amphitheatre that plays host to weddings, movies and theatre productions, there’s Byrne Lagoon, a bird sanctuary, pathways that connect Albury and Wodonga, and follow the storyboards created by Eddie Kneebone along the pathways within Gateway Village. Future lakes development opposite Gateway Village will include a children’s park, bbq’s and lake foreshore works for recreation are currently underway.
